THE TRAVEL JOURNAL

During the course of filming Pepi Fandango, director of photography Samuel Navarrete kept a photo diary of the shoot. The images are a companion piece to the film, and a selection can be found below. They reveal the changing landscapes of Europe and Spain on Pepi and Alfred’s journey south. In them, the ghosts of the past and the present seem to speak to each other. Small, seemingly insignificant details become charged with emotion.

We’ve made a playlist to accompany these incredible images. The playlist reflects Pepi’s own journey toward flamenco.

At first, Pepi couldn’t listen to flamenco, he was afraid it would “rip everything open.” The musical journey begins with the Schrammelmusik and Weinerlied Pepi remembers from his childhood: ironic, nostalgic songs his mother would sing that speak to his Viennese character. Interspersed are songs from the Spanish Civil War and the Mexican Revolution that Pepi would discover later in life, alongside the French Chanson Pepi encountered in France after the camp in the mining town of La Caunette. The boleros were the first Spanish language songs he listened to. From there, he journeyed across latin music from across the continent that led him finally to fandangos. The flamenco songs from the film and that inspired us are placed throughout the playlist, such as Niño de la Cava, Curro Piñana and others.
